They lost in court. The funding freeze was supposed to go into effect at 5pm, but federal courts blocked it until Monday at 5pm.

Correct. There is still privatized plans with their own PPO/HMO network negotiations. There are many facets to the system we have now. And I agree that the privatization component needs to go and single payer would be better. Greed exists with both issuers and providers.

That’s my point. Those ACA plans are administered by the big payers that were already big players prior to ACA. I have a Medicaid ACA plan administered by BCBS. Now, providers accept BCBS private plans, but not ACA plans. It’s different payment models.

I agree. The plans like the Blues had established provider networks with deep discounts. The startup ACAs had trouble negotiating provider networks because they had a smaller membership base.

Those startup ACAs didn’t survive for long and competition for established payers in the market survived. One startup survived that’s CommonGround in WI.

Partially correct. Patients were given subsidies on premiums, but there is a component for premiums setting by issuers too. Year one, small startup ACAs didn’t have claim experience to properly set rates. They were promised support by CMS to reimburse issuers that fell short at the end of the year.

This left the largest most established issuers like UHC and the Blues to run it. Those were the companies that got us to institute the ACA and extend benefits to millions. Of course, those bigger issuers to advantage of the market and got more of the subsidies.

Some of the issue with the ACA falls on CMS not the issuers. Early years of the ACA, CMS failed to provide the subsidies issuers were promised. Disparity between claims vs premiums were greater than what CMS reimbursed. This put a lot of the small state plans out of business eliminating competition.

IMO it’s just a readjustment from the recession. I think we’re heading into another recession under Trump as people are losing their jobs and foreclosures are on the rise.

This country wants to run the healthcare system like Fortune 500 companies, then it’s not going to get any better. First thing to cut is expenses and what is an insurance companies largest “expense”? That would be claims. Policies are the revenue product and claims is expense. Simple as that.

You can file appeals with the state if you feel coverage was unfairly adjudicated. If the abuse is broad, the state will penalize the issuer.

The ACA has done great things, but it’s flawed by privatization of insurance, which the GOP still wants more of. It’s going to get worse in the next 4 years. It’s far from perfect, but it was a good start. Let’s hope it’s not killed off.
