“Not like what?” “Not like some jealous lover. I am fucking jealous. Why do you think I keep sticking you in the van?” Closing his eyes, he tipped his head back until it thunked softly against the steel pole behind him. “You’re so goddamn capable, Rey. So goddamn good at this job. But I see one of these assholes even breathe in your direction—and all I want to do is pick you up and run.” Rey had only ever known Ben Solo to be a liar, a consummate actor, using every tool at his disposal. Even his flirtation was a disguise… …wasn’t it? “Ben,” she whispered, realizing at the stupefied look on his face, the foreign sound of his name in her mouth, that it was the first time she’d ever spoken it out loud. “I could, potentially, be amenable to being carried away.” He stood upright in an instant, that huge body of his towering over her even ten feet away, and without another word, wedged his neck and shoulder into the pole and swung his legs straight into the air, pumping leg lift after leg lift in a physical feat that Rey didn’t think should even be possible. In awe, she watched as he used every bit of his body except his hands to shimmy up the pole until he landed in a crouch on the ground. “How the fuck—” With a hobbling gait, Ben shuffled over and behind her. She could hear his knees hit the concrete, the grunt of pain when the dislocated one made contact with the ground, and felt his breath rush across the top of her ass. “Ben, what are you doing?” “Following instructions, Rey.” A soft kiss landed on one of her bruised knuckles, and several more followed, his mouth working its way up to the length of cord wrapped tight around her wrists. “Keeping my mouth full.”

A dispassionate part of her brain, a part beaten into her by thousands of hours of training and mission simulations and strategic assessments, calculated the odds of her being able to carry him if he couldn’t walk his way out. “Forget I said anything, Solo. Get us out of here, and I’ll assign blame anyway you want.” Those leonine eyes of his narrowed dangerously, gaze flickering over her body, shivering in the gloomy light, and then he shrugged. Insouciantly, like the same carefree devil she’d met in Coruscant all those months ago. “Sweetheart, I’m open to suggestions, but I’m a little tied up. So to speak.” A loathsome little smirk tilted one side of his mouth up. Every time, every single time, Rey had seen that ridiculous smirk of his, he’d used it to push his damn luck. “But you now—why don’t you scoot over here and use what God gave you?” Every single time. “Use what exactly?” “Your pretty mouth, princess. Chew through my ropes like the feral little creature you are, and then I’ll shoot our way out. I don’t think there are more than six guns still in the building. Light work.” There was a puddle of blood pooling under his bad knee. His shiny dress shoe kept slipping in it every time he shifted, waves of red cresting up over the sole. “Listen up, you asshole: a, they’ve broken at least two of your ribs and dislocated your knee, and b, I bested your shooting record last month at Control. If anyone’s shooting our way out of here, it’ll be me.” Rey plowed on, too heated for anything resembling circumspection. “And I know I said I’d drop it, but given that you’re the reason I got caught at all, maybe your mouth would be more suited to being stuffed full. You could stand some quiet time.” “Oh, I’m the reason you got caught?” Like the flip of a switch, his tone turned from smirking to dangerous. The tone he used when browbeating suspects. The tone he used when he ended lives. “You crossed the line with Hux, Rey. You had me half-convinced you were going to sleep with him, and if he’d managed to get you alone in that sadism chamber he calls his palazzo, he’d have hurt you in ways you can’t begin to imagine. Possibly permanently.” “Touch her and you won’t live long enough to regret it. I’ll snap your scrawny neck in two and send you straight to the devil with my regards.” “Motherfucker, it’s called being undercover. Convincing him I wanted nothing more than to fuck his rancid brains out was part of the goddamn mission. And then you had to walk in like some jealous lover and fuck everything sideways. Now my cover is blown, we’re both stuck in a refrigerated charnel house, and, more than likely, we’re bound for an unmarked grave.” “Not like, Rey.” He almost never used her name. we see a chair and a woman tied to it - she appears to be scantily clad (bare feet, etc) and her hands are tied behind her back The world had tilted. It was her first thought as Rey swam back to consciousness, the tall windows across the way, more broken than not, hanging drunkenly off rusty hinges. The meat hooks above her, whistling and clanking under the constant air conditioning like noxious windchimes, seemed much farther away than when she’d first been manhandled and strapped into a chair. It was freezing inside. And her head was pounding. Multiple contusions were blooming down what Rey could see of her legs, and there was an ache in her jaw. But she could open and close her mouth, her blurred vision was rapidly clearing, and she found she could wiggle all ten fingers and toes. She wasn’t completely doomed yet. “Well,” drawled a voice somewhere behind her, in a tone practically engineered in a lab to provoke, “so thrilled to see you’ve finally rejoined the land of the living, princess.” Ah. Of course. They weren’t completely doomed yet. On a generous day, Rey could even admit that Solo’s presence increased the likelihood of an escape by a factor of two. But her head felt like an angry beehive, and she was lying on her side, in an absurdly cold warehouse decked out like a supervillain’s wet dream, in the merest whisper of a balconette bra and lacy thong. A fucking thong. It was not a generous day. Injecting as much of a sneer into her voice as it was possible to do while frozen blue and nearly nude, Rey replied, “So sorry, Solo, I didn’t realize you were on a strict timetable.” If she was being strictly honest, Rey knew most of her injuries, including the bump on her head, were her own fault; she’d tipped the chair and her person onto their respective sides with a bruising bang after trying—and failing—to free herself. But, if she was going to go ahead and be honest, then it was also true that Solo’s inab— “Besides, it’s your fault we’re in this position anyway.” With a bit of thrashing and even more flailing and at least several skin cells left behind on the porous concrete floor, Rey managed to flip her chair just in time to see Solo sputtering in outrage. “My fault? My fault? How is you raising the suspect’s alarm my fault, sweetheart?” Their captors—Hux’s goon squad, faceless and nameless, but with accents that Rey’s aptitude for languages had placed across four nations—had been relatively civil to her. Relatively. Agent Solo, on the other hand… While she’d been tied to a chair, he’d been strapped to a pole, arms pinioned behind his back. The tux he’d been wearing was ripped at the shoulder, his tattoos gleaming underneath, and his snowy white shirt was spotted with blood. She thought they’d broken at least two of his ribs before she lost consciousness. “Stop hurting him! He’s just a civilian I used to get into the party. The idiot knows less than nothing. I’m the only one who can help you!” He looked far worse now. The cut carving over his forehead and cheekbone, the one still dripping down his shirt, she thought it would likely scar. And one of his knees…well, knees shouldn’t do that.

i was 100% assuming "i left because you're better without me" (hist rom upbringings unite) or some shadowy *waves hands* job of some kind, but there's no reason we can't have high-wire shenanigans alongside either (both?)

Unfortunately, Ben had not, in point of fact, heard of masktok. Ben was not on TikTok. Ben had only the haziest idea of what TikTok even was. No one in his life, up to this exact moment in time, would have thought to even ask him about such a thing. He had dallied in a half-hearted affair with Instagram for all of five months about seven or eight years ago—but his feed had been gathering digital dust ever since on two hazy photos of Riverside Park and a poorly cropped one of St. John the Divine, and that was that.

The house seems lonely—partially due to it being all alone on a relatively big lot and partially due to the lighting. It appears to be autumn at dusk. Unsure what else to do with his life in the wake of his mother's death and the loss of his job, Ben retreats to a remote Vermont farmhouse.
