Official account of the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada. A community of fearless hope and relentless action for animals, people, and the environment.
Each peace dove reminds us of Dr. Jane's belief that true peace comes from understanding between people, other animals, and the natural world.

"With the peace doves, we remind everyone of the truth they sometimes forget – that peace is possible," she once said.

What started as one student project has since taken flight across 75 countries and counting.

These doves have been carried through schools, villages, mountains, beaches, and more as part of Dr. Jane's global movement for world peace.

But we need to act.

As we continue to remember Dr. Jane, let's advance her mission. And let's build the world she envisioned – where animals, people, and the environment can all thrive.

The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is committed to carrying this work forward. Join us at JaneGoodall.ca.

We have an opportunity to act now, so let us act. Let us be bold. Let us honour Dr. Jane's legacy not only with nice words, but with real action.

As she would often say: "Together, we can. Together, we will. Together, we must."

We understand, appreciate, and respect the efforts made to protect Zeytin – and we stand ready to support any steps that may lead to his relocation to an African sanctuary that can meet his needs.

Gorillas are intelligent and emotional creatures. Like our own kids, they need nurturing, social bonds, and room to grow. Zeytin is young, and this is an extremely important time in his development.

Every day spent isolated like this risks long-term harm to his physical and emotional wellbeing.

Today, he remains in captivity – far from home, far from the companionship of his own kind, and far from the care he so urgently requires.

The Jane Goodall Institute expresses its concern for his welfare. We hope that he can soon heal in an African sanctuary equipped for his needs.

Dr. Jane knew that storytelling was an impactful and powerful tool – one she used wisely.

As we continue to remember and celebrate our founder, we'll use that tool too, and we'll keep sharing her stories.

She wanted readers to connect with what she wrote, because then they would be inspired to get involved.

"I want people to understand about the chimps," she said, "not just a few scientists reading dusty old words in a dusty old library."
November 12, 2025 at 1:52 PM
"Scientists didn't write popular books," she was told. But she told them: "Every word in this book, as far as I know, is as true as if I wrote it in a scientific way."

Dr. Jane knew that using scientific language would prevent readers from connecting with her work, and that would have been no good.

Learn more and adopt one of these chimpanzees. Let's be like Dr. Jane – and let's make sure our closest animal relatives are safe, protected, and able to get the care they need.

Note: We do not endorse the handling of, or close proximity to, wildlife. This represents a historical context.

These three are among the more than 150 chimpanzees at Tchimpounga, the Jane Goodall Institute's sanctuary.

They were rescued and treated for various infections, ailments, and diseases – and they are now thriving and enjoying the second chance they have been given.

Thanks to conservation efforts, white rhinos were reintroduced in the early 2000s – and today, the population is growing.

Through initiatives like this, JGI Uganda continues to advance Dr. Jane's vision – supporting national species conservation strategies for chimpanzees, lions, and now rhinos.
