I WILL NOT STOP CARING
I will not stop caring, whatever the cost.
I will not cease loving, no matter the consequences.
The political winds may howl above me
Scattering people like leaves in a storm
But I will hold fast to the common ground
The wisdom that once formed us.

Not easy these days, but I will get up every morning, drink my coffee, pray, and try again.

From”On Tyranny” by Timothy Snyder:

Defend institutions. Do not speak of “our institutions” unless you are making them yours by acting on their behalf. They go down like dominoes unless each is defended from the beginning.

I support public education.

Yoko Ogawa, “The Memory Police” - I can’t stop reading this book. It’s not science fiction, it’s not dystopian literature. It is something incredibly different. With its Japanese-influenced simplicity, it has powerful messages about memory, voice, and control.

I am an obsessive fan of Nordic mysteries, and Ragnar Jonasson is arguably one of the best of the throng of regional authors. If you want to dip your toes into the icy genre, this is good place to read. He co-authored the book with Katrin Jakobsdottor, the former prime minister of Iceland.

I am reading “The Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler. It is either very prescient or very dystopian - or both.

All that you touch
You Change.
All that you Change
Changes you.
The only lasting truth
Is Change.
God
Is Change.

FOR WARMTH
by Thich Nhat Hanh

I hold my face between my hands.
No, I am not crying.
I hold my face between my hands
to keep my loneliness warm —
two hands protecting,
two hands nourishing,
two hands to prevent
my soul from leaving me
in anger.
