As admin for a number of friendly Signal groups, in which we build community by benignly organizing our neighborhood’s snow day BBQs, poker nights, helping each other out, gardening, soup nights, and summer block parties, I can say Amanda’s delightfully visceral explanation is factual & funny. 😂

Okay, so in Signal if you want to talk to multiple people you have to create a group and give it a name, for example "JD Vance Humps His Couch." You then add people from your contacts to the group. If you are a competent user of Signal, you can then restrict the permissions so that only designated admins can add people. If you are an absolute dipshit whose only job qualification is pwning the libs on Twitter, you would create a group about war plans and not know about or activate this functionality. If you are in a group and are allowed to add members, either because you are an admin or because the admin was raised on lead paint milkshakes, you then must do the following to add someone: Click on "JD Vance Humps His Couch" Scroll down to "Add Members." Select one or more people from your phone's contact list. Click "Update" Confirm that yes, you want to add that member. This is impossible to do accidentally. Then, once you have gone through the multi-step process of adding a member, an announcement appears on the screen for literally everyone in the group to see: "JD Vance Has Added Chairry to the Group." This sentence is a line in a single-stream text thread and if anyone is reading their messages they cannot miss it. (If they are not reading their messages, one might wonder why they have been included on the chat to begin with.) At this point, anyone can say in the chat or privately, Hey JD, why are you adding the bedroom-eyed plush chair from Pee-Wee's Playhouse to our chat about your upholstery problem? Yet nobody in the war bro chat said a thing about the new member added to the group. This is heartbreaking. 83 years of soft diplomacy and goodwill for freedom, truth, and democracy, suddenly gone. America is not made “great again” by silencing the trusted Voice of America. 💔

Michael Joshua Abramowitz I am deeply saddened that for the first time in 83 years, the storied Voice of America is being silenced I learned this morning that virtually the entire staff of Voice of America-more than 1300 journalists, producers and support staff —has been placed on administrative leave today. So have I. VOA needs thoughtful reform, and we have made progress in that regard. But today's action will leave Voice of America unable to carry out its vital mission. That mission is especially critical today, when America's adversaries, like Iran, China, and Russia, are sinking billions of dollars into creating false narratives to discredit the United States. VOA promotes freedom and democracy around the world by telling America's story and by providing objective and balanced news and information, especially for those living under tyranny. Even if the agency survives in some form, the actions being taken today by the Administration will severely damage Voice of America's ability to foster a world that is safe and free and in doing so is failing to protect U.S. interests. For more than 80 years, Voice of America has been a priceless asset for the United States, playing an essential role in the fight against communism, fascism, and oppression, and in the fight for freedom and democracy around the world. Today, VOA reaches more than 360 million people every week, in 48 languages. In many dictatorships, VOA is often the only reliable source of news and information. I salute the amazing staff of Voice of America. Many of them came to America from authoritarian countries where they were not able to practice journalism freely. It is inspiring to be their leader, and they have my deep respect and appreciation for doing their part to advance freedom and democracy.
