Proponents of animal welfare point to survey after survey showing Americans care about animal welfare, but while that's the case, Americans tend to know next to nothing about the food system. That's why "humane," "free-range," and other claims appeal, because they seem like viable options.

New astroturf "animal and environment" front group just dropped that happens to oppose animals and the environment. Seems to be focused entirely on opposition to cellular agriculture and Prop 12.

The problem of course is that scaremongering travels far and fast; fact-checked correctives take time and move slowly.

More irksome use of stats. CR claims that average Americans are exposed to "up to 5.3 micrograms of lead each day through their diet." They don't link the source, but it's clearly Gavalek et al. (2019), which says mean exposure is 1.7 - 5.3. So that's a big range to not mention explicitly.

Consider that for high-risk groups like child-bearing women, FDA flags 8.8 mg/day as a risk level. Prop 65/Consumer reports uses 0.5 mg/day (3.5 mg/week), which is an impossible standard. So this graphic looks terrifying, but is actually below risk level *for high-risk people*. Let's all calm down.

Given the massive scale of feed conversion loss in animal ag, if humans ate more soy and soy products - tofu, tempeh, etc. - instead of meat and dairy, we would actually need far less total soy and less soy-related land use.

the thing with clearinghouse-style "thought leader" events is that you get the oddest mishmash of bedfellows whose politics of food are often diametrically opposed. a remarkable group of orgs to have under one roof. also obviously massive disincentive to critique livestock or boost climate science.

Consider that studies that parse the types of UPFs being eaten, like this one, tend to conclude that UPFs are bad when they contain bad things and not bad, or even good, when they contain good things.
