It is late September and, once again, a Richard‘s Pipit was recorded at Bremgarten airfield near Freiburg im Breisgau, SW Germany. Very curious to see whether, like last season, there will be several records over the winter months here as well. #birding #RichardsPipit #PWC2025

Ready for the breeding season: newest ecoPi models deployed at Bremgarten airfield - very excited to see what bird species we will detect acoustically this year - Thanks so much for the great cooperation, Oekofor team! #NABUSuedbaden #birds #ornithology

March 15th, 2025: Alpine Swifts are back in Freiburg! An early start to a hopefully delightful season! Also present in the city today, a flock of 12 Crag Martins. Typical for the current cold and wet conditions, they were foraging over a small urban lake. @swiftfreiburg.bsky.social

Unexpected record of a Richard’s Pipit staying for two days at Bremgarten airfield (southwest Germany near Freiburg) in mid-February 2025. Is this a bird wintering close-by (latest record end of November 2024), or a bird on migration? So many questions…

A trip to Lake Federsee near Bad Buchau in SW Germany was very rewarding. In wintery conditions, we recorded Bearded Readlings, Great Grey Shrike, Hen Harriers and Great Bitterns - including this one that flew right above our heads!

The patch at Bremgarten airfield FR had a surprise in store this weekend with a tristis- / Siberian-type Chiffchaff. The sonogram displays its piping and, at the end, downslurred call. An exciting bird for these drap November days! #PWC2024 #ornithology

End of August is peak time for Honey Buzzard migration in southwest Germany - a true highlight of autumn migration. Depicted is an adult male soaring.

This winter, a 2nd cy Glaucous Gull is staying in the southern Upper Rhine region, and in February it also visits the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district.

Great Northern Diver (2nd cy) feeding on crayfish on the Rhine river at Weisweil SW Germany today. Unfortunately the bird was entangled in some netting, I really hope it will be able to get rid of it. Also present, adult Red-throated Diver and Black-necked Grebe. #birds #birding

2024 begins as 2023 ended: an #AlpineSwift in Freiburg in SW Germany! Presumably the same bird has been oberved since December 26th, at times also a second one. Looking at the weather forecast for the next two weeks, overwintering seems hardly conceivable though. #birds #birding #ClimateCrisis

Alpine Swifts at Christmas - who would have thought? Today, on Boxing Day, two Alpine Swifts were observed near Freiburg in SW Germany. Thus the exceptional series of extremely late sightings continues. #AlpineSwift #birds #birdings #ClimateCrisis

Still some Serins at airfield Bremgarten at the end of the year. Curious to see how long they will stay. #PWC2023 #lowcarbonbirding #birds

On November 21st, the Alpine Swifts left Freiburg for their winter quarters, about a month later than usual and just before a cold front. The picture shows a pair shortly before take off (screenshot from the webcam run by the Zoology Institute at the University of Freiburg).

What is happening here? It is November 10th, and there are still 14 Alpine Swifts at the largest roost in Freiburg in SW Germany, plus a few more at other sites in the city. This is an unprecedented long stay by far! #birds #birding

November 3rd: still, more than 25 Alpine Swifts present in Freiburg - how much longer will they continue this record stay despite the cold and rainy weather? #AlpineSwift #birding
November 3, 2023 at 7:15 PM
In 2023, the Alpine swifts remain at the breeding grounds in Freiburg im Breisgau (SW Germany) for longer and in greater numbers than ever before. Even today, November 1st, at least 24 were counted at the nocturnal roosts! #AlpineSwift #Birding
