💙📚👀 a necessary antidote to the prevailing AI optimism promoted by the big tech companies developing it. Using the history of OpenAI as a central example, Karen Hao contrasts the imaginary and unproven future benefits of AI with the concrete, real-world problems its development has already created -

Lasu grāmatu un tur atsauce uz 1944. gada ASV Izlūkdienestu rokasgrāmatu - par nevardarbīgas sabotāžas organizēšanu. Kaut ko tas man ļoti atgādina. Ak jā, Latvijas iekšpolitiskās peripētijas ap Stambulas konvenciju. Vai tiešām Latvijā vairs nav reālu problēmu, ko risināt?

Probably the best recent book I’ve read on China. I went in sceptical, as the main tenet of the book seemed overly simplified: China as “an engineering state, building big at breakneck speed, in contrast to the United States’ lawyerly society, blocking everything it can—good and bad.” 💙📚👀

“So, in deficit countries, manufacturing, a central part of the tradeable sector, is smaller than in surplus countries, where the opposite is true. This point, made by Beijing-based Michael Pettis, helps explain soaring US protectionism and so Trump’s trade war.”

Shouldn’t the Euro area therefore have rules both against excessive deficits but also against excessive surpluses and anti-consumption policies? The book is full of seemingly counterintuitive assertions, e.g. on the dominance of 💲, and was, for these reasons, a very valuable and insightful read.

This has nothing to do with the spendthriftiness of some countries running deficits or the hard work habits of countries running surpluses but is rather a direct consequence of government decisions to pursue certain economic policies. In this sense, the book seems to revive thinking of J.M. Keynes

A great book also for non-economists by @michaelpettis.bsky.social for those who want to understand how economists view international trade. 💙📚👀 Although the book is relatively old, the economic theory and many imbalances it describes in most cases remain unchanged.

“ Our calculations suggest that, even after adjusting for Russia’s lower wages and costs and its increased budgets, Mr Putin’s defence spending does not match that of NATO’s European members. Yet fragmentation and duplication mean that at least some of Europe’s spending is wasted. “

Spent a few days in Berlin. Situation: the whole city feels like one big Baustelle. Same impression while driving through Germany — major infrastructure projects under repair to maintain high standards. Let’s hope it’s for the better
