🇺🇸 Study 2 (50 US states; N=336,491), using Gallup data, replicated and extended these findings, revealing that states with greater terrain ruggedness exhibited a higher proportion of vertical (“boss-like”) supervisory relations, rather than egalitarian, collaborative (“partner-like”) styles. (4/4)

🌎 In Study 1 (78 countries; N=156,658), we combined cross-national survey data from the EVS/WVS with digital elevation models. Results showed that national preferences for military rule and a strong leader (who bypasses democratic processes) were higher in countries with more rugged terrain (3/n)

Overall we find: Yes! ⛰️ More rugged terrain predicts stronger preferences for hierarchical authority. These findings hold after controlling for GDP per capita, population density, urbanization, gender, age, and spatial autocorrelation. (2/n)

Just like Moritz, I am also very grateful to my PhD advisor Jochen Gebauer, to Tobi, my family, my friends, and my colleagues for their constant support. I am also grateful to the University of Mannheim and to the MZES, where I am now a post-doc research fellow 😊 (4/4)

I am particularly honored to receive it together with Dr. Moritz Ingendahl who also did his PhD at the University of Mannheim. He studied articulation dynamics and their effects on judgments. You can read about our PhDs and the jury's reasoning here: dgps.de/die-dgps/pre... (3/n)

The biennial Heinz-Heckhausen Award honors early career researchers for their PhD dissertation in psychology. I am very honored to receive this year's award for my PhD on how determinants of well-being vary across sociocultural contexts - and why this might be the case 🤓 (2/n)
