I think it's pretty clear what I was trying to achieve with this Google search. Thanks AI 🙄
Luckily Wikipedia came to the rescue with my copy-paste symbol

I think not many Blueskyers know who I am due to low-effort Bsky engagement on my part. But hey, I'm standing for our local community board here in The Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula. So if you live in the Mt Herbert area and surrounding towns, hopefully you'll get to know me better soon!

All the odd socks from ONE toddler from ONE load of washing. Do not be fooled by all the ones that are the same colour but different sizes

Seymour saying the quiet part loud here:
"The kind of people who enrol on the day are the kind of people who vote for policies I don't like."

Finally found a use for the incredibly stupid Disney discs Woolies are giving away.

Justified text was once popular because it looked neat, but that very neatness made it hard to find your place! You still see it a lot in academic/legal documents and books. I'd like to eliminate it in all these cases!

(only use justified text in narrow columns, where it helps separate the columns)

You may think centre-aligned looks pretty, but it’s hard to read, especially in large blocks.

(it's ok to use centre alignment for headings or short single paragraphs, if the situation calls for it)

Please, please my beautiful people, left-align your text!

Left-aligned text leaves these lovely intents on the right, which help you subconsciously keep your place, and your eye always knows where to go to find the start of the next line on the left.

Are you suggesting I would buy middle-of-the-road teas I don't particularly need just to get my hands on a cute free mug? How dare you.

Book rec: The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston & Mario Spezi

This is the book that started the journey which would lead to me becoming a journalist.

If y'all want to see what sexism (or... something) looks like, try a stock image search for "woman sleeping" vs "man sleeping"

It almost, almost looks like Fortrose at high tide, lake Vincent in the background. Spit slightly the wrong shape though?

I'll finish off by saying that I only read the first book of Nix's The Seventh Tower series, The Fall. And... I don't know why I didn't read more. I still think about it. A wicked tale of adventure in a strange but slightly familiar world (a Nix trademark).
Why didn't I read the others? Well...

Shade's Children was chilling. It may have been too much for young young adults, but it had all the grittiest elements of Suzanne Collins' Mockingjay. Dystopian future, kids in danger, moral quandry, and brutal disgusting murder in the name of fascism and revolution.

Then there's the Keys to the Kingdom series. These were fun, a lot of fun. Even in my teens I really enjoyed Nix's fantastical take on how bureaucracy can hide evil. Yeah, that doesn't sound like much of a blurb, but READ MISTER MONDAY! It's more relevant today than ever! And fun! I promise!

So of course, I went back and read Sabriel. Obviously, it wasn't actually necessary to read this first. Side note - GOD I love an author who writes their trilogies as stand-alone books.

More witchy, bades-out, badassery.

They're (mostly) all young adult fantasy books, but don't let that put you off if that's not your thing. They go hard.

Let's start with the Abhorsen Trilogy, I think probably his best-known works. I was actually introduced to these in 2001 when Lirael came out (I was only 7 when Sabriel came out).

I have just, finally, finished A City on Mars by @zachweinersmith.bsky.social and @weinersmith.bsky.social – what a well researched and snort-into-your-tea fun book.
