For a moment in 2018 when the Windrush broke there was some recognition of human impact (and racialised history) of UK immigration controls. All since submerged by controlling-the-numbers panic. Nothing about that from IfG (all coherence and "realism") and not much hope for the White Paper either

This should be changed asap.

If we give someone refugee status, it can't be right to then refuse them route to become a British Citizen. To say they can have a home in our country, but never a place in our society and be forever second class. freemovement.org.uk/good-charact...

Your reminder that the UK chooses to insist on people having visas to travel, won’t make exceptions even in the direst humanitarian circumstances, and then presents people who try to escape without them as the greatest threat the country faces
The failure of the UK government to let British citizens bring their non-British family members when being evacuated out of Gaza is leading to some extremely difficult decisions. A better way is possible.
