The layers in this exposed bank are varves - deposited annually at the bottom of a lake bed. In this case, the lake in question existed ~12,000 years ago and was dammed by a glacier. The two larger stones in the image are drop stones, which fell from a melting iceberg at the lake surface. 🧊

Fantastic couple of days in Stirling with this excellent group of people.
The 2025 SAGES Annual Science Meeting in Stirling has been great!
