February 15, 2024 is World Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) Awareness Day. 💚

This is a rare & devastating form of cancer. Targeted therapy holds a lot of promise. But treatment options are limited and access to clinical trials is poor in Canada.

I haven't posted in a while, but sharing this is very important

I received this beautiful card in the mail from Margie Gray; the mother of Myles Gray who was killed by the Vancouver Police in 2015 while he was experiencing a mental health crisis.

Margie is dedicated to advocating for the removal of police from mental health crisis response: "We deserve better"

A growing number of communities are realizing the need for civilian crisis response services. I created this website to support advocacy efforts by compiling & sharing existing work focused on decoupling police from mental health crises.

The NB govt's response to our letter (w/ 300 signatures) calling for them to expand access to voluntary supports rather than rounding up & incarcerating drug users.

"Government's role is to find ways to help the public and legislation can often be the tool to establish what can be done"

Huh?

In Feb 2014, my presentation at the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police conference was framed around the question of:

"How do we reduce the involvement of police in the lives of people with mental illnesses?"

We clearly know how. Nearly 10 years later, I'm imploring decision-makers to do it.

It's police budget time in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

A reminder that police budgets have steadily increased in HRM without commensurate returns.

If you'd like to see improvements in community safety & well-being, demand increased investments in community-led programs rather than police.

Feeling the need to re-read contemporary nonfiction...

"The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with war, the Ministry of Truth with lies, the Ministry of Love with torture and the Ministry of Plenty with starvation"

A 1-year evaluation of the civilian crisis response service in Toronto showed a high level of satisfaction with the quality of the service among service users and stakeholders.

This was a really enjoyable read. It was a page-turner with a well-developed protagonist. Such an artful handling of a complicated intersection (Indigenous/motherhood/psychosis). Highly recommend.

For the "harm reduction causes crime" crowd:

The most rapid increase in Canada's crime rate pre-dated the introduction of harm reduction programs in Canada, which began in the late 1980s and was soon followed by a dramatic decrease in the crime rate across several decades.

The federal incarceration rate for Indigenous men in Canada is 8x higher than that of non-Indigenous men. The incarceration rate for Indigenous women is 12.5x higher.

The #TruthAndReconciliation report (2015) called on Canadian govts to address this chronic & persistent injustice.

They haven't.

For over a year, I've been identifying new mobile crisis programs that respond without the police to mental health crises. Over 220 civilian programs are now plotted on the interactive map. It's my attempt to normalize non-police-involved crisis response services.

We know that drugs seized by police has little-to-no impact on reducing crime or drug use. We also know that it disrupts the drug supply and is associated with increased rates of fatal overdoses. But, yay drug war.

Transferring over stills of my favourite gif from the other app (courtesy of Karen Ward). This encapsulates a seminar that I teach, so I've also saved you 13 weeks of class with me and around $1,000.
