Complex identities: philosophical pragmatists argue against attaching single identities to people. Dividing the world up into democracies and nondemocracies, via ‘league of democracies’ or ‘network of liberty’ is bad as it inhibits cooperation and makes democracy seem like a Western quality.6/

Experimentalism entails a problem solving approach. Ideas are valuable if they are tested and found to improve people’s lives. That allows policymakers leeway to try and cooperate to make progress, but policy needs to be continually checked via engagement with wider publics.5/

Empiricism, emphasising experience, is vital to philosophical pragmatism. Policymakers need to consider what policies mean for actual people. What would an enforced peace mean for ordinary Ukrainians? What impact will cutting development aid have on people’s lives in developing countries? 4/

Take climate negotiations. You include reps from the fossil fuel industry, but balance them with people affected by climate change. Big states China/US/India, need to be involved for policy to be meaningful, but if they act as spoilers, you look beyond govts to mobilise wider publics.3/

Democratic inclusion: foreign policy cannot just be an elite activity. It has to include the wider public and civil society to get feedback on what works. As John Dewey put it, an expert shoemaker will know ‘how to fix the shoe’, but it is the layperson who ‘can tell where the shoe is pinching’.2/

Already read 3 terrible articles about the upcoming SDR. Might have to avoid media this weekend.
If you read that the Army is struggling to recruit because they're not busy, consider this graph of application trends:

They've got 5 years and the biggest majority in a generation. Anyone even mooting going early should be instantly dismissed as they are an imbecile.
