If anyone is thinking about attending SASE 2026 and looking for a panel on East Asia, democracy, political economy, here's something i'm putting together. Pop me an email if your interests fit and would like to participate. Feels like SASE might be popular this year as many avoid US-based events.

If anyone is in Hawai'i later this month. Will try to give my own take on the constantly evolving situation in Korea and what it might mean for a future pro-democratic administration based on past lessons. Looking forward to seeing colleagues and getting out of the Manchester weather.

I admit I was surprised as most people about today. But the writing was on the wall, as we explore here. I have to confess that I wasn't listening close enough. The type of wild anti-communist rhetoric that depicts even some free market types as 'commies' is tiring and routine. 1/

I also discuss liberal President Moon's attempt to address the problem of the prosecution and the rise of Yoon in the last chapter of my recent book (available open access from @uofmpress.bsky.social, see my profile)
