I’m a medical anthropologist, based in Ireland. Professionally, I’m interested in poverty, mental illness, addiction and aging. My research is in Europe and Africa. I post a lot on politics bc health and society r intimately connected.
I’m at DataFest Africa in Kampala, Uganda, the culmination of regional satellite sessions in Nairobi, Amara and other places, under the theme of “Reclaiming Data Futures.” Today, we discuss “Framing the Data Status Quo, Shifting the Lens.”@maynoothuniversity.ie @agakhanuniversity.bsky.social

My colleague and I @chrisbrunsdon.bsky.social from @maynoothuniversity.ie are at DataFest Africa: Reclaiming Our Data Futures at Aga Khan University, Nairobi. Maynooth University is a proud sponsor of this event.

A real treat as part of the Alumni Lunch at @maynoothuniversity.ie: the National Science Museum is open. It houses a wealth of early scientific instruments, going back to the early 19thC. One of the hidden gems on campus.

My last day at @agakhanuniversity.bsky.social Nairobi, discussing the alliance with @maynoothuniversity.ie. I am very grateful for all the time shared with (and consideration shown to) me, but I want to especially thank Sally and Pam of the Global Engagement Office.

Lily Lake in the Karura Forest in Nairobi. Hard to believe there’s a city of over 5.5 million right outside.

Since I landed in Nairobi, I have been craving goat. Thankfully, a friend recommended kienyejis.com. Great meal. You can even get termites in season. 😁

As a cat-owner, this rings very true to me. 😊

Dr Olusegun Morakinyo gives a very enlightening keynote talk, “Alice Stopford Green, the African Society, and African Studies in Ireland” for Africa Day at @ria.ie. Interesting connections between development of Irish and African Studies.

No doubt, some have seen Harvard’s response to Linda Mahon, Trump’s hemiglot Secretary of “Education”, threat letter. I did my Postdoc at Harvard. There’s much to criticize there, but it IS intellectually serious. In an anti-intellectual culture, they tend to play along, but don’t piss them off…

I found this on X. I have never seen a better depiction of that fascist insect.

I haven’t had the pleasure of working in Ireland’s National Library in Dublin for a while, so I missed this amazing Lego interpretation of the building. What a piece! @nlireland.bsky.social

Found on X. Pretty much where those yahoos, with an emotional range bounded on one side by anxiety and on the other by wrath, (who r also fond of downmarket Nuremberg rallies) now find themselves. Shame about the rest of the country.

I am about to lecture on Ageing in Africa in the Department of European and Global Studies at the Leipzig University in beautiful Leipzig. Thanks to the Arqus University Alliance for making this exchange possible.

Next time u interact with online medical misinformation merchants about vaccinations or masking in America, show them this blast-from-the-past ad from the parents of MAGA. This was a moment when ChristoFascism eagerly masked (despite what we all knew about HIV) to show their disgust of LGBQT folks.

This is one of the better QElon critiques that I’ve seen in recent days. 😂

The modest lecture theatre in the Austrian Academy of Science. 😁Sure, they were politically problematic, but the Hapsburgs sure knew how to decorate public space.

A beautiful day in Vienna.

You gotta love Vienna. This is the quaint, unpretentious café in the midst of the Vienna Zoo. 😁

When money is tight
And is hard to get,
And ur horse also has ran.
When all u have
Is a heap o’ debt,
A pint of plain is ur only man.
