It's my birthday! And what would an anniversary issue be without a big retcon and a status quo shift?
Atop the final page of Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol, where Jane is welcomed back to Danny the Street and the lyrics about a better world from Awake by The Smiths fill the captions. A blue piece of paper reading The Retcon, or "Retroactive Continuity" was introduced to comics in the letters page of All-Star Squadron 18 by Roy Thomas to describe new, canon work that was set in the past but which may effect the present. Retcons have developed something ofa bad reputation over the years. Playing with the past can be a tricky thing to get right. Smart reinterpretation will be accepted without factoring in the rewrites, leaving the Secret Agent Parents, weddings sold to the devil and ill concieved relaunches being the poster boys for writing the past. However, I have a soft spot for recontextualising the past. Sometimes writers couldn't say what seems obvious now, either because they lacked the vocabulary or just as often, the permission to. Did you know Nightcrawler's parents were intended to be Mystique & Destiny? Claremont wasn't allowed in the 80s but it's canon now. Which is a very roundabout way of saying something I haven't been allowing myself. This should be a welcomed retcon, god knows it has been a popular fan theory for years. I'm a girl, in case the subtext wasn't clear. Atop the last page of Peter Milligan's Enigma, where a lizard ends his story unclear what happens next and starts again from the beginning in search of clarity, a pink slip of paper presents the following text The Secret Origin of Valence The Voyager It's always hard to know where to start with an origin. Is it the Spiderbite of dread I felt staring at a large mirror shortly after meeting someone who only knew me as a fem cartoon, or the muffled memories of teenage dysphoria that experience brought screaming back? Do I start when I first looked at my legs and wished I was a girl so I knew if not shaving them would be a defiant act? I suppose it doesn't really matter, it still lead to a decade of Australian summers wearing ankle length pants at all times. Just like a Valerie Solanas touting mother or an aversion ot mirrors or a general disquiet with existing in physical space doesn't matter. Because a secret origin isn't about why someone was disempowered. A secret origin is about what comes next. About being exposed to lasers and strange chemicals to turn my body into something that makes me happy to fight for justice in a world that hates and fears me. Heck, when you put it like that it starts to feel a little familiar.
