The only member of the family who is saved is the cowardice fool in the end. His nature ended up causing him to make the best decision and save his family without violence. He does this after being won over by our protagonist. It's all done so elegantly. I just love it.

had a specific background and ideal he wanted represented in Sverkel. He clearly still lives in the core of the empire, and fails to stop his own son and grandsons from becoming bewitched by the evils of violence and capital.

Sverkel doesn't back down on any of his views. Whats a frail old man do in order to change the world but till away at land and try to not be part of it. He tries later to assist in the saving of Gardar but this failure alongside his inability to save anyone leads me to think Makoto Yukimura

The way we are introduced back to Sverkel in his second appearance is in an interaction where he and Snake bicker as he cooks. It's clear this conversation has happened before and it goes the same way. Sverkel is doing the good and worthy work of pushing back against the evil of those he lives with.
