I understand your frustration, and I'm sure he played badly, but is this clip really so bad - he's one of the forward so should he really be goal side of that player? Surely there were defensive midfielders or defenders who should have been picking him up?

It's not new, but primary care is just as stretched in these areas too, probably for similar reasons.

Oh god, what an awful conflict of interests... I had no idea!

Unfortunately this is how change happens (I'm thinking of oil power stations in the 1970 as another energy example). This just happens to be one of the most consequential moments of clarity and absurd decision-making. I hope the LNG investors get their just desserts...

Surely it's a possibility, or at least difficult to distinguish, given that ireland was largely under an ice cap until 15000 years ago? They are unlikely to have travelled across the globe with them, but Ireland would have been repopulated with fauna at the end time as humans started to return.

Although we are veggie we refer to them as the fish and chips shop nearly as much as the chippy (for an alternative fancy name)

I don't know the details of these comments, but the other side that really bugs me is using mental health problems as an excuse for bad or even evil / dangerous (to others) behaviour. They may be linked, and mental health problems can be mitigating factors, but it is not helpful to correlate them.

Are you referring to the child sex abuse inquiry? My understanding was that the government explicitly didn't want a judge, for practical reasons. My feeling is the same as you though, they should just make it a proper judicial inquiry and be done with it. It may take longer, and possibly cost more.

I definitely think that this is a risk that very few people discuss. I don't think the head down in phones is as big a risk as the light pollution (particularly in the sky. I used to get depressed how many times I would get excited only to learn that it was an aircraft)

Growth is ok, but in this context it feels like the same old "grow the pie and let it trickle down" (mixed metaphor I know) which can't work indefinitely.

I'm concerned about what this may mean for parents using Calpol (or more accurately putting them off it). Obviously plenty use it way too much, but it is also vital for alleviating the often very frequent fevers and pains that babies get. Vital for both the baby and any carers!

I love budleigh salterton... Lucky you!

That's where I once taught geological mapping! Much better weather than the blizzard I remember though...

And which one is more likely?! Feels like trying to magic out investment, but it really is a zero sum game.
July 29, 2025 at 1:19 PM
That's easy to answer. If pay is your main mandate, how can you call off a strike when they haven't even started negotiating the main topic? Working conditions could possibly be much better with the current pay, and it would be acceptable, but they won't have the same immediate impact of pay rises.
July 29, 2025 at 1:01 PM
What can there BMA do? Fighting for doctors pay shouldn't be pulled down by others, it should be seen as an opportunity for the whole system. It may cost the govt a lot, but they are currently doing false economies across the board in the NHS.

Why don't you feel solidarity?
July 29, 2025 at 12:59 PM
Last year's pay uplift was only narrowly accepted, and this year's action was comprehensively supported. Do you think that pay is fair for early resident doctors?

I think that senior doctors don't appreciate how rubbish it is for all those on lower salaries. It doesn't need to be doctors V nurses.
July 29, 2025 at 12:55 PM
It is so annoying how many commentators make it out like this strike is nothing to do with the government's choices. It is not in the BMAs powers to save or "kill off" the NHS. I think Toynbee is completely wrong anyway -better pay and working conditions will make the NHS more resilient.
July 29, 2025 at 7:03 AM
What about trainee lawyers and accountants? I don't know for sure, but I do know that the top contracts were already far above resident doctors salaries and have increased significantly further.

It may not be possible for them to find the money, but they need to negotiate.
July 17, 2025 at 5:35 PM
Firstly, not everyone else has had their salaries held back, and secondly barely anyone else has to pay for 5 years of university plus extra exam costs leading to six figure debts.

And even fewer others have to make life and death decisions on a minute by minute basis in their jobs.
July 17, 2025 at 3:16 PM
In the same vein, it is a large part of my theory for why incel and misogyny are thriving amongst youngsters -whilst celebrating and promoting underprivileged girls is valuable, it can feel like it is diminishing boys, particularly when they have underperformed for the last 20 years vs girls.
July 16, 2025 at 12:33 PM
What I mean is that this approach almost reinforces Norman Tebbits view that foreign cultures cannot co-exist alongside a (mythical) single British culture. She should have been allowed to celebrate her culture as ridiculous as it may have been seen.
July 16, 2025 at 12:27 PM
I don't know, whilst it is probably a trap by people with far-right views, they have highlighted why their views are becoming less fringe. It seems like a big mistake by the school, and ironically demonstrates a lack of cultural sensitivity, even if you think that the Geri Halliwell dress is poor!
July 16, 2025 at 12:23 PM
To be honest, most will leave at the end of foundation training, which is already happening to the extent where we can't fill up CT/GPT posts with even overseas doctors, or the end of their training programme, but either way we are watching training resources and losing top talent.
July 15, 2025 at 9:20 AM
I think you're wrong about suggesting it is just a (cynical) strategy to exploit this (not so) new govt. The reality is that they are underpaid and underappreciated for the literal life and death responsibility that they bear, and the mandate is huge within their ranks for this action.
