Mosquito fish can survive in pools on the granite boulders with are not connected to any running water. They can eat the mosquito eggs and other insect larvae which other fish can’t get to. They have to somehow get back to the river when floods come.

Granite stone cutters used to split the boulders in the James River with wedges and sledge hammers. Many were descended from enslaved African Americans. Now this area is the James River Park in Richmond.
