“The Society of Unknowable Objects” Gareth Brown - 3.5/5

This was a lot more fun & action packed than I expected and it flew by. But it kinda wrote itself into a corner and I don’t think it found a satisfying ending.

my friend: if you have nothing to do at work you should update your linkedin!
me: anyway, here’s a tiny acorn family

“Death of a Gossip” MC Beaton - 2/5

This was an okay mystery but it thought so little of its female characters it was really offputting. I know it’s an older book but this wasn’t just it being dated. I don’t like when women authors seem to hate their women characters.

“The Historian” Elizabeth Kostova - 4/5

This was very long and pretty weird but also quite good and I liked it a lot. Very good for October. Dark academia without being DARK ACADEMIA TM.
October 26, 2025 at 12:26 AM
“The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches“ Sangu Mandanna - 3/5

This was very cutie and I liked the found family but the writing was just a little too basic for me and kinda felt like it beat me over the head with explanations of everyone’s emotions.

nothing is as tempting to me as the Fancy Pears. I don’t even like eating pears that much but I think they’re so beautiful.

“An Accidental Death” Peter Grainger - 3/5

This was a solid little british detective mystery with a likeable mc, but also sadly forgettable bc I read this a week ago and forgot to even post about it. I gotta take a break from mainlining detective novels bc they’re blurring together.

“Excite Drake Starts Over” Linda Holmes - 3/5

The first 60% of this book is sooooooo good. Like nearly a perfect romcom to me. Then the last third fumbles a lot of the big emotional beats.

“We Have Always Lived in the Castle” Shirley Jackson - ??/5

This has been on my tbr for so long and Id been waiting for a fall to read it but I fear I had the wrong expectations. I liked it, but it wasn’t spooky. If you have thoughts about this book pls lmk.

reunited with # him (my friends william shakespeare mug that i think looks like auston matthews esp when i sit on the couch across the room) (also he’s haunting and stares at me while i try and fall asleep)

“Dead Money” Jakob Kerr - 1.5/5

The New York Times lied to me! This sucked! Maybe it would be more tolerable for someone who doesn’t hate tech companies. It had one good twist in the middle and the rest was boring & poorly written.
September 27, 2025 at 12:31 AM
“The Investigator” John Sandford - 3/5

This was kinda giving Old White Man crime fiction - in the realm of James Patterson. But sometimes that’s fun! I couldn’t do it all the time but this went by fast and helped break my slump.

important late summer vibes from this weekend
September 14, 2025 at 9:40 PM
“The Frozen People” Elly Griffiths - 3/5

I really like this author and this was a fun & fast time travel mystery. Sadly not as good as the other series I read by her :( but I’ll still read more. Also too open ended for me with a detective mystery I think.

“Unlikely Animals” Annie Hartnett - 3/5

I am definitely becoming a fan of Annie Hartnett - I did this a disservice by listening to it in too many little pieces. I think I’ve been on the hunt for the surprise feeling I had from Road to Tender Hearts but this didn’t quite hit it.

“So Far Gone” Jess Walter - 2.5/5

This was fine! Honestly finished it a week ago and lowkey forgot about it immediately. It had a lot of promise but the execution was lacking. Just needed to turn every dial up.

sorry to say this but jacob elordi and benson boone look very similar to me and it’s very funny to watch people react so differently to their looks. to me, you could cast these men as brothers.

“Hit Girls” Nora Princiotti

This was like a 6 hour podcast ep from one of my favorite podcast girlies. I didn’t really “learn” anything but it was still a fun listen. Kinda weird at times to be listening to someone my age talk so knowledgeably about stuff I don’t remember from “our” childhood.
