Democracies are healthiest when voters reward results rather than rhetoric. Brexit showed what happens when that balance collapses.

Too often, appeals to “protect our children from debt” ring hollow. It’s easy to preach restraint after cashing in on cheap homes, pensions, and tax breaks while voting away shared assets. Moral authority is thin if you profit first, then warn others about the cost of clearing the wreckage.

Real concern for the future means recognising past advantages and harms, then supporting fair taxes, public investment, and international cooperation. Only by sharing today’s costs can boomers help give the next generation the stability and opportunity they once enjoyed.

Younger generations now face soaring rents, insecure work, student debt, and a climate crisis. They must rebuild services and tackle environmental damage without the same safety nets that earlier cohorts relied on for security and advancement.

Decades of voting for tax cuts, privatisation, and austerity weakened services, housing, and higher education. Support for Brexit further narrowed prospects for young people, removing rights to live, study, and work across Europe while shrinking the economy.

Boomers often say they don’t want to saddle youth with debt, yet much of the damage is done. Many gained cheap housing, education, and secure jobs, then backed policies eroding services and Brexit cutting opportunities. True care means admitting this legacy and helping rebuild fairness and prospects
