Locally I keep 1 monthly backup for 3 months back, and weekly backups for the current month + more than one 'generally current' backup within the current week.
Remotely Gmail/other can be good, can keep 1 older and 1-2 more current backups there.

This is less important but can be good to know the the HA command line.. Good things to know are start/stop/reboot as well as loading backups manually from the cli.

Some things that'll save you i find are:
Get generational backups setup asap.
During HA updates watch for key HA components and make sure a recent backup exists before doing the update.
