They were found not guilty of corporate manslaughter and manslaughter by gross negligence respectively.

The NHS trust that runs the hospital, North East London NHS Foundation Trust, and the ward manager of the unit Benjamin Aninakwa, have been convicted of health and safety breaches.

Her family later found out she’d tried to harm herself using plastic bags or bin liners on 18 previous occasions during her admission. The bin liner in the bin she had access to wasn’t removed, despite the risks it posed.

Alice had died having been able to get access to a plastic bin liner on the ward she was being treated on- where she was meant to be safe.

Since she died almost ten years ago, her family have been fighting for accountability for what happened to her.

But she wasn’t just a diagnosis- her family talk about a vibrant, fun and smart young woman. Just before she went into hospital in 2015, she’d been looking forward to going to university.

She’d struggled with bipolar disorder and an eating disorder since she was a teenager. Sometimes she needed specialist hospital treatment.

Alice Figueiredo died whilst a patient at Goodmayes Hospital in east London in 2015. She was 22 years old.
