I *think* that this predatory journal email has a subject line that says a paper with 15% plagiarism detector results is okay by them? Is that what it's saying?

This is my favorite -- from the Boston Public Library, dated 1942. It's a DIY trailer.

"Deadline at Dawn," (1946), certainly follows the tradition of film noir in that the plot is essentially incomprehensible.
The hero picks up allies from the streets of NYC, who are somehow pledged to help him even though they are entirely strangers. It's a city of strangers all helping the sailor.

the price on these is good; I know people who would pay that much just for the Stearns pin. There's a very common Stearns poster that people like a lot, with many reproductions, that many people have on their walls.

an interesting and well-priced sidepath tag from Erie NY up on the usual auction site today, with some additional period pins. 1899 is a very good year for NY sidepaths, before the state sidepath enabling statue in 1900. I have copies of state statutes for many individual counties, but not Erie.

my ongoing experience as tech support for aging parents is that technology companies have absolutely no idea who their users are and even less interest in creating usable products. What even the hell is this kind of troubleshooting? How do I explain this over the phone?

related to "brass," says the OED. So "brassy" or brass-faced or maybe even brass balls, in slang or figurative use?

can't say I like this weird-ass citation style that the EHR is using. like footnotes with author-title reference to a bibliography? just use chicago notes-bib if you're going to have a bib, stop being weird. historians provide page numbers.

here's #1116 for sale back in 2015; I *think* it was also for sale in 2011. I don't have the prices it sold for in either of those two years, I should start taking note of that. I think that #1116 shows more signs of having been used than #612, there's some bending in the metal.

fine example of a sidepath tag from Cortland county New York for auction on the usual site. This is indeed 1906, not 1896; I've seen this mis-labeled before when #1116 came up for sale. an acceptable price for this sort of bicycle memorabilia.

I'm thinking of "Gabriel Over the White House" (1933) and that I've told students for *years* that its events are impossible; Congress would *never* give over its power to the executive. But here's @jamellebouie.net making it clear that the GOP has done just that. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/29/o...

Excellent UI design, meta. Good work, you can certainly concentrate on other things besides core user experience.
