it's *sort of* true but also very very much not true. Most people WERE more equal in eg 1979. They were pretty much all as poor as each other. Simpson's Paradox strikes again

in particular this has led to a massive breakdown in trust of anyone in any position of responsibility. Neal Stephenson (of course) nailed this over 30 years ago
