At one time, Twitter’s bot problem was a famous sticking point in its acquisition (i.e. under-reported bot numbers were how Musk argued he should be able to back out). I always found it strange that insight on that subject wasn’t addressed by any of the eventual Twitter Files released.

I didn’t know that New York City is west of Philadelphia.

I asked ChatGPT: Amid a technology race for more and faster computing hardware, including processing chips to analyze large language models, does distributed computing have a role to play where millions of consumer computers link together to compute even better than centralized data centers can?

If you don’t have an archive of your Twitter data, now is a good time to go into Settings and request an export. Fun fact: You own the copyright of anything uniquely authored and published by you on Twitter. I predict this will become a central topic in the AI training wars.

Personally the best explanation to me for the nosediving of Twitter by Musk is the theory it’s to clip the wings of collective organizing (strike, protest, etc.) toward the favor of autocratic regimes who fund his other projects one way or another. AI LLM and even DM blackmail files are just icing.

One of the last things I rambled about on Twitter was that the site should allow List-like control over Block lists. Follow others’ public Block lists, batch add usernames to a Block list, etc. blocknyt.com is interesting (but not endorsing). It would elegantly solve the moderation problem … Sigh.

If you right-click a YouTube video then right-click again in a different place, you can click “picture-in-picture” and drag/resize the video in a pop-out. I learned this last week.

An interesting thing about prediction markets is that my “yes” bet doesn’t actually mean I think it’s going to happen — it means I envision the payout on the unlikelier outcome will be more than if I bet the likely consensus. Misreading hedge positions probably affects society more than is healthy.

A trivial iOS feature I miss: pinching the screen a bit on a webpage to take a slightly zoomed-out screenshot of more of the content. Now it just pinches to tab view.

Can Bluesky acquire the name “Twitter” since it isn’t being used anymore?

It would be nice to be able to import my Twitter data archive (posts) to Bluesky.

I’m automating a search on here for usernames that followed me on Twitter, earliest followers to newest, and following them. Lots of names who I have not interacted with in a very long time. Will run the script every few days.

I remember where I was when I set up Twitter, I was in Dallas in 2009. 14 years later, here we are.
