Silence

Not a breath of wind on this serene summer morning.

Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 has so many beautiful places, but my absolute favourite has to be the big open landscapes of Assynt & Coigach. I can’t wait to be back there this month. It’s truly where my heart is.

Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. This place has given me so much since I first picked up a camera in 2018. I remember my first visit and saying to my friend “I had no idea all of this was on the same island I live on.”

A small pine sapling clings on to a black/grey, jagged rock that seems to cut diagonally into a fast flowing, cold river. The river fills the entire frame, aside from the central dark rock with the try and a few other rocks in the distance. There is nothing else in the frame. The image is a vertical 4:5 ratio. There is some white water dotted around the frame in small patches. The water is a steely grey blue. The first warm light from sunrise is kissing the small pine sapling, giving it warmth. The image is titled Castaway because the sapling looks like it’s stranded on the rock.

Dethroned - 2024

I really enjoyed composing this. It was my first portfolio image made with the wonderful little GF 35-70mm lens. It feels like an oil painting to me.

It’s autumn. A fallen tree trunk with lots of spikes broken boughs protruding from it rests diagonally from left to right in the frame. It lays next to the remaining, still standing, trunk it fell from. The floor is mossy green and peppered with little yellow birch leaves. In the background are a number of birch and larch trees, all clinging on to their remaining yellow leaves. There are some grey, moss-covered rocks to the top right of the frame. To the top left of the frame the forest recedes into rusty red bracken instead of mossy green on the forest floor. The image is bright and balanced and has an oil painting look to it.

Diagonal layers of red sandstone and blue shadows. This was taken during blue hour, where the final glow the day cast a soft, colourful light on the rocks. The layers of sandstone begin the bend upwards and form what resembles a mountain rising from a distant landscape. The title is Orogenesis - the scientific term for mountain forming.

A chaotic grey mountain ash or Rowan tree fills the frame. It has peppermint coloured moss attached to the end of its many branches. There are no leaves left. All that remains are hundreds of bright red berries in small bunches that spread out over the entire image.

This year had very much been one where I really stopped trying to stick to one particular style of image and just opened up entirely to less obvious scenes. However, old habits die hard. Big, open, airy landscapes will always be my true love. #LandscapePhotography

Against All Odds - 2024

If you’re a photographer you can probably just guess how much enjoyment I had composing this. Really taking my time to get the shutter speed just right. Just a really pleasurable and creative experience in a peaceful place.

2024 has been the most creatively satisfying year for my photography to date.

Every single one of the images in my 2024 portfolio was made in the middle of the day during overcast or raining conditions. This is the real UK. And this work is the real me.

I can’t wait for 2025.

I don’t often deviate from 4:5 ratio images. There’s something about that size, especially for horizontal images, that just works for me. However, when I do it’s to capture very simple scenes as squares like these. #LandscapePhotography #Photographer #Nature

Dark Mirror - probably my favourite photograph of all time. It’s represents moment I finally understood how my own introspection and emotions shaped what I liked to make images of. I have this hanging in my house. It means the world to me. #LandscapePhotography #Nature #Photography #Scotland
The sky is a dark blue, thick cloud with a band of pink as the sunset tries its best to burn through the sea fog at the horizon. There middle third of the image are gentle hills that have mist hanging in their depressions. The bottom third of the image is a still Lochan (a small loch) reflecting the colours of the sunset sky. There are reeds in the lochan that are silhouetted. The predominant colours in the image are dark blue, pink and black.

I think this is a contender for my favourite image of 2024. I call it ‘The Last Tree’ as, for me, it resembles the remains of a tree at the end of the Earth, with a huge storm cloud looming in from the left. #LandscapePhotography #AbstractPhotography #Nature #Photography

A wave of immense power crashes against some soft sediment cliffs. The wave is spraying everywhere and you can see the sediments being eroded from the cliffs already entrained within the water.

As a landscape photographer in the UK you have to embrace the gloomy, rainy and miserable weather days otherwise your camera only comes out of your bag to shoot the grand landscape about twice a year. Here are some of my favourite gloomy day images. #LandscapePhotography
Haar, some see fog just lingered around the coast all day. The patterns in the send lead to a distant island in the mist. Rainscape. Some distant mountains under a very large grey sky, it is raining and you can see the rain falling in the distance. The mountains fade to white. There are numerous small lochs in the foreground. Time. Rolling brown, jagged hills lead to a distant mountain range under a slightly pink orange sky as the sun tries to rise through the thick clouds but just can’t make it. Hypnogogia. A very distant sand dune pokes into the frame toward the top of the image. The top third of the image is white from low cloud. The bottom half of the image is a flat beach, almost entirely white apart from some wet patches that appear darker.
