Great to work with @theipaper.com and Lucie Heath on this story, which shows how areas in England with the highest rates of fuel poverty stand to lose out if spending on the Warm Homes Plan is manifesto commitment is halved at the Spending Review

That's why these businesses & trade bodies, who work across the design, installation, manufacturing and finance of insulation and clean heat call on government to uphold their manifesto pledge 3/4

Strong support from UK's heavy industry for @laithw.bsky.social's letter asking government to decisively lower electricity prices to make the UK goods more competitive and incentivise electrification

Today, organisations working for a safe climate, better housing and a fairer UK, have come together to speak with one voice on new new standards for the private rented sector.

It was a joy to do this hand in hand with @generationrent.bsky.social's Parissa Zand and Rosie Dutch 1/3

What's more, the research clearly shows the last regulation has been the driving factor behind this change.

That's without an effective enforcement framework, or support for landlords. Hopefully this time round government will improve the way the policy is implemented. 3/4

Nationwide Building Society find energy efficient buy to let homes are worth significantly more than inefficient ones.

A or B rated homes are clearly viewed as a safe bet for landlords with a long term view of government requirements to ensure privately rented homes are affordable to heat. 1/4

Cold homes disproportionately affect older people. One of this government's lasting legacies could be to insulate homes rented by older rented people. New @independentage.bsky.social report discusses how we can carefully insulate rented homes lived in by older people, take a look

good news energy chat about the growth of solar made me want to share how much I rely on and love my panels. Lived off grid on a boat for 4 years, woulda been pretty miserable without solar. Best part is anyone can learn how to wire up panels and battery :)

I'm hosting a webinar Tuesday 10am next week with an excellent panel of experts and housing professionals to discuss how we can raise standards of decency and energy efficiency in the private rented sector.

Drop me an email james.dyson@e3g.org or sign up here to attend: shorturl.at/Aqqhz

In a shocking coincidence, my composting services have been made redundant by this new govt regulation requiring businesses to separate waste; hooray!

Though the regulation is good, I'll point out my service is less carbon intensive and benefits go back to the community (well the southwark worms)

So far I’ve used Bluesky for work and news, maybe time for some bits about me. Although we need systemic changes to tackle climate change, I also believe in the power of aligning our actions and beliefs

Here I am with office food waste, which I compost at a secret location as we have no collection!

The scheme could be reinforcing inequality between councils.

Per head, councils in big consortia get half the amount of cash single or small consortia get. More experienced councils are hoovering up public funds while less experienced ones get a smaller share of the pie. 4/5
March 11, 2025 at 2:06 PM
Fewer big consortia: historically, councils have applied for cash in big consortia (as many as 65 councils). This can take the local out of local delivery.

This is decreasing, big consortia got 77% of the cash in 2022, but today, they only got 50% 2/5

If only £3.4 bn is invested from 25-28 then government will need to force an unsustainably large investment into the supply chain in 2028 and 2029. The graph also shows how small government's investment plans are currently compared to the investment allocated by the Tories. 2/2

"Mr Matthews (@edmatthew.bsky.social) said it was critical the government's June spending review recommits to the programme and provides greater funding for low-income households as the current costs - even with the grant - can be prohibitive." too damn right

I like this more human outline of local one stop shops for home retrofit advice and support by the Centre for Ageing Better, who have published two reports on the 10 million homes in the UK which are cold and or in a state of disrepair.

Energy garden are recruiting for two community engagement officers. They're funded by solar farms built on national rail sites, they put the proceeds into youth education, and the gardens like the one i help out at, see pic of me and puddle

Farmers doing their best to recreate the famous cars vs foot / bike bus space image.

If they all got out their tractors, they'd be equivalent to the little blob of humans on the left.

How many people turned out for nature & climate rallies (on foot?).

This is a long term issue. We’ve had 14 years of funding cuts, policy flops, and increasingly complex conditions around delivery, have resulted in fewer and fewer households receiving support, even as the government spends more and more money.

new Nesta report combines decarbonisation and social case for to rebalance or reduce electricity policy costs. One of the most striking outputs is this graph, which shows the poorest families (A,1-3) pay the highest % of net income on green and social levies.

Well done to @mashley.bsky.social and the team. Particularly appreciate this graph, showing just the levies as a proportion of net income. thank you!

International comparison shows the UK has relatively low rates of vacancy. I think many homes which are vacant here are so for good reason, e.g., dislocated from jobs and basic needs.
