huge ty to everyone supporting the Substudies project, & in that spirit i finally finished the translation drafts i started a while back of Adorno-Benjamin’s joint critical (incredibly catty lol) “reports” for Horkheimer on 3 Paris conferences in early August ‘37! open.substack.com/pub/jamescra...

Just began working on organizing the blog & converting to shareable PDFs, & it’s going to be a big project! For life reasons, it’s going to be harder for me to keep going now, so any support would be crazy appreciated! & thanks for reading & sharing Substudies!

added a note on how Horkheimer (& Adorno) dissolve the problem of “the revolutionary subject”!
November 6, 2025 at 7:09 PM
Here’s Horkheimer’s response to Tillich’s demand for some potentially revolutionary subject or group or program that somehow stands outside of the world as the necessary ground for social critique (+ H’s defense of Marx’s “end of prehistory” thesis)!

more translation work from Horkheimer’s fragments on dialectical logic—this one’s from an earlier draft of the (1944) fragment “Haupt- und Nebensatz” that Horkheimer quotes in a letter (also in the works!) to Tillich as part of a defense of his & Adorno’s new “style” of writing in 1942
