i kept seeing similar accounts and thought that they agreed with each other too well... but the date of the restaurant's opening makes it just a story...

[...] According to a spurious legend, this was Leon Trotsky’s favorite restaurant during his 1917 visit to New York City. The first evidence of this restaurant dates to 1925 and it’s located at 1379 Intervale Ave.

Stebbins doesn't show up on the modern map. It looks like it wasn't too far (I think) from the park - here's a clip from a 1911 map titled Business District of New York, Brooklyn and Jersey City
