And only 12 of the 29 were successful

And, in a school where the whole cohort does languages - or at least a greater proportion of candidates than at national level, the targets become worthless at the bottom end because the national MFL cohort is more able than the general cohort

It’s awful to have to prepare good students for the feeling of failure in their exams…even when, grade-wise, they may have done quite well. “Don’t worry, you won’t have understood 50% of that GCSE exam, and you’ll still get your 7…now, try not to give up hope before the writing exam!” 🙄

Stanley Johnson was a remainer. He switched from Conservative to Lib Dem in the last election - and they had the most pro-EU manifesto of the major parties. I’m no fan of his, but he’s been fairly consistent in disagreeing with BoJo on Brexit.

My daughter set her heart on studying in Rome back when only a fool thought we would lose freedom of movement. Brexit, visas and residence permits have been a massive pain, but she made it somehow. Her tuition fees there are €1000 a year, not £9000. Studying abroad is the cheaper option by far

And even when they are, they’re not reliable - particularly in schools with large cohorts. Targets are calculated on the basis of a cohort that is much more able than, for example, the English and Maths cohorts. As soon as you see they have the same target for MFL as for History or Geography 🙄

Yes, I got that. I was thinking however that Trump is vain enough - and insecure enough - that maybe the Crown would get further with him than any politician

‘Governor’ Justin Trudeau. It’s high time that Buckingham Palace objected to this assault on the Crown.

As a language learner, I failed miserably in TL classes and thrived in those where the teacher wasn’t wedded to it. The only policy I ever wrote about TL was to say that, with no clear evidence that TL teaching was better/worse, teachers were free to exercise their professional judgment.
