To purify the bronze melted from Charlottesville’s Lee statue, the foundry had to remove the toxic elements (lead, etc) it contained—a metaphor for culling the damaging Lost Cause. We didn’t want to just put the statue in storage or give it away. Now we have material to create new public art.

Art project by Spanish artist Eugenio Merino, who crafted a creepily realistic head of the late dictator Francisco Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939-1975. Soccer players, using Franco’s head as a ball, play on a former battle site of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Soccer was politicized during the Franco regime. So these contemporary football players “return the war to the trenches” by playing where Republicans soldiers were killed.

These ICE arrests and detentions of Democratic officials are meant to deter others. But instead, we should be emboldened.
NYC comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Landers, commenting on his arrest and detention by ICE: “I hope other elected officials will do it, too. I hope other people will sign up with Immigrant ARC to bear witness and be escorts themselves. They can make examples of Sen. Padilla and Mayor Baraka and me. But if Americans by the thousands, by the millions, show up as we did over the weekend at the No Kings march in peaceful, nonviolent witness, we can respond to this moment of crisis with a love of our democracy and what it means to be governed by the rule of law. Here in Charlottesville in 2017 at the Unite the Right rally there was a contingent of fascists (EO convert M@tthew Heimb@ch and his now defunct Tr@dition@alist Workers Party) who marched under the banner of “Orthodoxy or Death” publicorthodoxy.org/2017/08/16/d...

So pleased with this outcome! What a boon for Charlottesville City Schools.
Charlottesville City Schools superintendent Royal Gurley and City of Charlottesville City Manager Sam Sanders address the press, announce that CCS has successfully acquired the Trump / DOGE-shuttered former Federal Executive Institute. CCS will take over FEI (which had also been sought by UVA) without cost and will use the complex to expand pre-k and other programs.
