I think there are many, many roughly equally important Nobel-awarded discoveries the public should know about. It makes me sad that one of the best known was by an awful guy, when there were other options to be the best known.

But the thing I’m saying isn’t that Sanger’s discoveries should be more important because he was a better human being. I didn’t decide to give Sanger two Nobels. He got those on the merits. What I’m saying is “Why is Watson better known than Sanger if Sanger got 2 Nobels?”

My wife has no idea who Max Perutz or Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin was. I don’t think that’s because the DNA structure is very important for people who aren’t biologists to know.

Jon Cohen quoted someone in his piece who said Watson was the most famous scientist in the 20th century and I feel certain Einstein was more famous but regardless the reason people know about DNA is they know the Crick and Watson story. Regular people aren’t that way about protein structures.

Sorry, hard to do this in real time because we’re crossing replies. I think “the public” gets familiar with a very small number of big discoveries, and I worry the selection there is not based on the true relative importance of the discovery but rather the self-promotion of the discoverer.

I’m constrained by Nobel’s will😭 I of course agree with this but the narrower progress I’m striving for here is not to let “My Nobel is more important than theirs because I’m a bragging creep” keep succeeding.
