It’s been hard to get a real sense of how good/bad the team really is the past few years.
Could they really make the playoffs as soon as next year? How does that happen?

It was just lack of effort.
Young guys can play through mistakes, but there is no excuse for not playing hard.
Benching teaches them that level of effort is not acceptable.
Coach can worry about improving the other things once they are playing hard.
