just doing things
local inference is about the same environmental impact as playing a video game for the same length of time, not surprisingly, because it's basically doing the same thing. concur that this is probably a bigger power draw than doing it at scale, but it helps bring the whole thing into perspective

no way flash is a 1T model. flash is gonna be something you can fit on a non-clustered TPU server

it's frustrating that the shared blocklist was apparently the most important feature to build on the site. they shipped shared blocklists before they shipped any of the decentralization features. they had shared blocklists before direct messages. they had them before the site had 100,000 users

they could have charged me $1 per month to block the site for my phone and I probably would have taken them up on it

watching The Matrix (1999) too many times and then trying to create a totalitarian world state that puts a ban on math

this is going to turn out to be some intra-service fight that's been going on since the 90s, but one side figured out how to sell it to Trump so now it's his signature idea. same happened with space force

short version: new team brought in to make it after Take Two bought the rights, they fucked it up, it's in permanent early access now
October 24, 2025 at 6:53 PM
yeah, it's too bad

but to your point, yeah, there's no Labor Theory of Value in a video game price, nor should there be, they'll frequently spend $100M on something boring and valueless. Hollywood does this too sometimes!
October 24, 2025 at 6:52 PM
it's weird because you don't know if it's going to be worth $0 or not going in. I paid $15 for Kerbal Space Program and put probably 10,000 hours into it, to me it was obviously worth more than $15. but I've paid $60 for stuff that I realized wasn't fun after twenty minutes

today, a venture capitalist will call a PID controller "AI" to raise a quick buck and then bluesky posters will demand that you not use a PID controller in your motor code
October 24, 2025 at 6:24 PM
I mean yeah but that's the joke. whoops our resource isolation system before was insufficient but now we've got it this time
October 23, 2025 at 1:48 PM
they're the only people who have a use case! NSA needs to run Shor's Algorithm, what the hell does anybody else need a quantum computer for?
October 23, 2025 at 3:03 AM
earlier: "we invented a 'process' that will isolate the resources (memory, file handles, etc) used by this code from that other code so they don't interfere with each other"

later: "we invented a 'container' that will isolate..."

they're still making money on the A100-era ones from five years ago, whose used prices haven't yet declined. the generation before that got cheap quickly but Ampere has had staying power

I am unhappy about this because I wanted to buy some used for cheap, maybe next year
October 22, 2025 at 8:17 PM
wait this doesn't even seem that hard

deliberately throttling my home internet connection so I can re-live the early '00s video piracy experience. downloading a 700MB DivX encoding of The Matrix and then enough video codec packs to destroy my computer permanently

need automated "open the windows and raise the blinds" instead of turning on the AC when it's cooler outside than indoors, but that's the part where it starts costing real money

pro tip: use a piece of tubing instead of the spark plug wrench to start the plug in the threads. You'll never cross-thread the plug this way.

I don't feel like draining the fuel tank to remove it. This is totally safe, right?
October 19, 2025 at 10:24 PM
really love how you can drain the oil from this thing without it getting all over the exhaust header, every bike I previously owned had that problem
