It’s a somewhat meta story that reflects on the impact SpongeBob has had on its audience through the other characters by having all his friends realize how important he is to them in his absence, leading to the trail sequence which is so cathartic as a fan of this cast.

Also I made a friend on the way out...maybe. i asked them if they liked the movie and they told me they'd never actually seen anything SpongeBob related before, and wanted to know more about it, particularly how this compared to the other movies.

The company has always treated their television output as a temporary thing. Once a show has ended, they see it as having fufiled it's purpose and thus is no longer relevant, so they don't wanna keep supporting it.

Gravity Falls somewhat changed this attitude, but it's still mostly present.

I mean, it's not that surprising. Disney has always been awful at giving their series home media releases. If Phineas and Ferb or Kim Possible can't get full series box sets, I wouldn't hold my breath for anything else.

The fact Proud Family and Tangled got them a while back was genuinely shocking.
