“ICE remains committed to ensuring that all those in its custody reside in safe, secure, and humane environments,” an ICE statement from April said. “At no time during detention is a detained illegal alien denied emergent care.”

Additionally, another detainee told Human Rights Watch that the medical response to Blaise was severely delayed.

Excitement has been building among detainees in Unit 1, says the unit supervisor. It's the first time in 14 years that the jail has allowed in-person visitors.

Under the U.S. justice system, people in jail are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Those who do not receive a bond or cannot afford to pay bail must stay in detention until trial, or until they plead guilty, or their charges are dismissed.

Sheriff Richard Coleman said visitation begins today for the Unit 1, the area of the jail that houses female detainees and male mental health detainees.
“It’s a humane thing to me," Coleman said at a press conference yesterday.
