I was one of many horrified passers by heading back from a beach trip - I wonder if they realise the damage they’re doing to local tourism

In focus groups, concern about Channel crossings greatly outweighed discussion of migration for work/study/family. This is similar in our tracker poll. There's been some hardening of views since 2022 but the public struggle to identify where they'd reduce migration when asked about specific groups

Meanwhile society is becoming more online, even since the pandemic, and exposure to polarised debates and media ‘perma-crisis’ are deepening these sources of division. We found broad support for action to address online hatred and foster healthier online communities

Combined these issues are contributing to mistrust of politicians, as have scandals including party-gate and ticket-gate. We found widespread ‘un-alignment’ with mainstream parties, loss of faith in politics as usual & more curiosity towards populism

Economic pessimism is creating deep frustration towards politicians amidst declining high streets, strained public services and rising cost of living
This is also restricting people’s interaction with community, limiting income and time for socialising

We find sharp divides over immigration & asylum - seen by the public as the top risk to local cohesion.
Perceived competition for resources (housing, welfare) is a key driver, exacerbated by misinfo and divisive political discourse. Asylum hotels also create tensions without local consulttion

It finds a troubling powder keg of low political trust, polarisation, online vulnerability and cost of living concerns that risk sparking into further unrest if left unaddressed

Simply cannot see how @rcolvile.bsky.social can seriously claim that migrant care workers ‘are not contributing’. They are taking care of our unwell and elderly parents/grandparents, filling a chronic labour shortage
