Is work on the section between the model segment and the Atlanta city limits underway yet? I think I saw you post recently that the piece on the Atlanta side is coming soon, at least.

~5 years ago, I had more days to just kinda wing a route to get a new segment, and the network of genuinely pleasant places to bike was extremely patchy. Still not perfect today, but feels like we’ve come a long way already.

I don’t hit many of these all that regularly or in both directions, since AAA routes are generally nicer, and there’s not really a set standard because I started making this on the fly years ago in Google Maps. But it’s something.

I still have that layer and update it when I can, but since key roads like Lee/Main, Peachtree, etc. don’t have any protection, the correlation between safe and flat/direct is lower than it should be.

What I found is that that level of comfort on the unprotected stuff is super subjective, can vary on the same road as you go, and highly dependent on which direction you’re taking key hills/stoplights.

A few years ago I started trying to bike as many different streets, trails, etc. in town and categorizing them in a Google Maps layer. The breakdown was trail/protected lane, any lane, and then three levels of road comfort.
