My daughter has also tried this, along with signs informing her little sister how to use chairs, and forbidding our dog from going upstairs (which work in a correlation but not causation way, in that he doesn’t go upstairs anyway)

Once went there to see what was there on the strength of the name alone. There was not much there.

Finally, we find a link between adverse life experiences during the pandemic and lower post-pandemic wellbeing, but do not find evidence that this is mediated by demographic characteristics or social support.
October 9, 2024 at 12:46 PM
We estimate how wellbeing differs by young people's own perceptions of the ongoing impact of the pandemic: those who indicate an ongoing negative impact in their lives have substantially lower subjective wellbeing scores.
October 9, 2024 at 12:46 PM
We document the substantial differences in subjective wellbeing --- especially highlighting differences by gender --- after adjusting for other demographic characteristics, self-reported levels of social support, and experience of adverse life events.

Your chances of sending a child to private school fall below 10% outside the top 5% of the income distribution. So far outside any reasonable definition of “middle”.

Careers guidance is key to helping young people make informed decisions about their future.

Worryingly, we found wide gaps in access to careers support by school type.

Private school pupils are significantly more likely to have accessed it than state school pupils

The findings highlight the large geographical disparities in opportunities young people feel they have available to them.

Narrowing these differences is crucial to ‘levelling up’ life chances across the country.

New findings on young people’s aspirations and future plans out today from the COSMO study team:

Those from London are much more likely to agree there are lots of career and training opportunities available locally, compared to other regions in the country.

Of those who sought help, 35% said they were either on a waiting list or had otherwise yet to receive it.

And the proportion waiting in less well-off parts of the country are higher: 39% compared to 28% of those in the most affluent areas. This is embedding inequalities.

About 8% have "very favourable" views of private schools according to YouGov; about 7% of young people attend a private school (www.llakes.ac.uk/wp-content/u...).

Obviously, it won't be a perfect overlap, but that is pretty consistent.

We're still actively working on this, so your thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.

We also see the (unfortunately) anticipated, widening of the gap between state and private school pupils compared to 2019 (but at least narrowed compared to last year)
August 17, 2023 at 10:28 AM
And that’s despite the unwinding of Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs), which appeared more generous in some schools:

Many also reported changing their education plans because of the pandemic: almost 60% over all and higher among those from less advantaged backgrounds. This is likely to have affected who is taking what kind of qualification this year. https://cosmostudy.uk/publications/future-plans-and-aspirations

When interpreting this year’s #ResultsDay2023 grades, it’s important to remember the context of this cohort’s journey through COVID-19, as tracked by our @COSMOStudy: a 🧵

We know from recent COSMO analysis that this is not always the case, with concerns about cost of, for example, going away to university weighing on people’s minds: https://cosmostudy.uk/publications/the-class-of-2023-opportunities-and-university-plans
