Nice surprise today with the northernmost English record for Monobella grassei (approx location = Green dot)
Hopkin Checklist places it as 'MODERATELY COMMON IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND', though since then, many more records have populated the map across the midlands.

Anyone know what causes this appearance of multiple pseudopupils in some butterflies?

Hey @writerpaula.bsky.social! I gather you'll recognise this one? Trying to see if I can put a name to the artist behind the illustrations, and you seem to be the one name I can actually get a hold of looking online. Any tips or contact info to start off the paper trail? :)

Note at the bottom this sheet of 3, from the DPRK! A little morally iffy since stamp issues are one of few ways the regime can pull together funds around sanctions by selling them on to Chinese vendors to then be distributed to collectors. These are from 1993, so I think I'm sort of clear?

Random art tip #2, commemorative stamps from the late 20th century can go for super cheap (especially in big lots). I probably won't be art-ing too much with them, too attached and I haven't even collected these yet.

Random art tip #001, fancy wine and drink can labels can be digitised pretty accurately by just rolling the container along the scanning unit of a flatbed printer as it moves

@britishspiders.bsky.social And who might be the culprit here? Yellow Iris, folded by pondside in Lancashire. A thin layer of silk covered both ends of the fold, with almost no silk, excrement, or indeed spider in the middle.

Never knew that, mine was a clay plantpot too! Need to start reading more of the descriptions + notes in the Hopkin key, lo and behold...

@bitheolaidhe.bsky.social Thoughts on this, on Ilex aquifolium?
Many leaves showing these green rings across the surface. Fungal?

Also fun fact, in the original novel of The Silence of the Lambs, the pupae of the Black Witch were used in lieu of the Deaths Head Hawkmoth of the film version.

Lots of this folklore surrounds death and destruction, one interpretation from South Texas based on an earlier Mexican myth, being that if the moth traverses all *four corners* of the room of a sick person, they will die — reminiscent of the opening to Wesley's Theory?

First thing's first, it's not a butterfly — it's a Black Witch moth, which is what first caught my attention to the fact that this was likely an intentional choice. These are surrounded by some heavy folklore across the Americas (If you won't mind me referencing Wikipedia for a minute...)

Just seen the new TPAB 10th Anniversary alternate cover, and I think I have an interesting idea about it.

Any dipterists know what the hell these Empis sp. are up to? There was a swarm of about a dozen of them on these plants, and these two were properly shadowboxing each other, absolutely killing me watching it back
