Erin was kind enough to acknowledge how today's dept looks quite different but still does good work (aw shucks!). She closed with a reminder to "not just look at language but also at people, what they're doing and their lives to get the whole picture in order to understand language use" 🙌#LingBing

Bob Johnson, Scott Liddell, Ceil Lucas and Sarah Taub were her teachers. Erin talked about how Bob was known for description, Scott as an empiricist, Ceil for sociolinguistics but it was Sarah who left a mark on her - she introduced cognitive linguistics to Erin, now a usage-based linguist

During her description of the LIS example, Erin referred to the trees in the photo in her slides. She didn't know I had detached her slides and positioned them next to her head. Her signed production of "tree" lined up perfectly with the trees in the slides. Accidental #EmboxedDiscourse amazingness!

Erin discussed the importance of describing and considering language ecology and more for signing communities since that shapes grammar and drives lang. change. She used LIS (Italian Sign Language) data as an example - it's described in her chapter in Ceil Lucas's festschrift (expected next year!)

He refused to use "SimCom" in the classroom when they started out. Along with Ceil Lucas and Scott Liddell, he really fought to get ASL used in the classroom and for deaf people to be seen as the experts they are for their own languages and communities 😍✊👊

Are there still delays? The Glenmont-bound train that just left Shady Grove is going remarkably slow - any reason why?
