I bike up to the Trader Joe's from downtown Milwaukee on occasion (for reasons even I don't fully understand) and approaching that area is fundamentally hostile if you're not in a car.

That's right! I think if I wasn't stubborn, I'd likely appreciate that extra layer of safety. (And, well, *I* don't have children to mind either)
