Read "The Price of Peace: Money, Democracy, and the Life of John Maynard Keynes" which also talked about the economics of the war. Pretty clear this spending level is one of the main reasons the British Empire split apart / the colonies got independence (a very good thing).

This, combined with tariffs, makes me think of a pre-1848 Austria-Hungary. The want to resist modernity, have the vast majority of the country working low-wage manual labor, rule via imperial fiat, and greatly restrict knowledge and learning to the most privileged. It was intentional then and now.
