Such a rule about felons would encourage the ruling party to convict promising opposition party candidates. So either way we're dependent on voters' intelligence and good will.

It is incorrect to think that "religion" just means a set of beliefs about the supernatural. Reading a post about science doesn't help one get along with others or with the earth. There are religions that focus not on "beliefs" or authority but on mutual covenants about how we treat each other.
