The last book of the semester is a cross-cultural comparison of different forms of inside and outside money written by a guy who did seances in the museum where he oversaw a rapidly accumulating colonial hoard, can't recommend it enough

People will go extraordinary lengths to soothe themselves, create elaborate frameworks around how killing their babies is justified, even necessary. One of the cognitive tricks is to suggest that it is not really a baby, but a demon, a changeling hidden by glamor or guile.

These were not isolated incidents, and slaves were not the only victims. Children were sacrificed.

If you don’t look at what the Dutch visited on the rest of the planet during this period, it could sound like a win. But instead, this book frames increasing wage disparity, deteriorating living conditions, and the eradication of extended kin networks as empowerment for women.

But really, read the book. Nancy Jay's "Throughout Your Generations Forever" is an impressive work of scholarship on violence, bonding and power. It is uncanny that our reading group to discuss her contributions will fall on the 34th anniversary of her death.

Tl;dr It takes a lot of work and blood to erase maternity and undermine reproductive power
