Official Bluesky account for the reelection campaign of Spencer Compton for Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
I mean, yeah, there are plenty of reasons to criticise the framing of the Enlightenment. Far too reductive of the currents behind it into a central movement, far too presumptive that all of its conclusions led to positive developments, far too presumptive to assume it functioned in the orthodox way.

Props to the one guy who just keeps plugging his own work to reject thinking about the idea. I would be doing quite a bit better rn if I had his drive.

Notably, none of these occur during the timeframe commonly described as the Dark Ages.

As someone who had chickenpox when I was five, I shudder whenever I hear that somebody is rearing chickens, and become quite hostile should I be offered an omelette.

There's absolutely no justification for not unifying Germany beyond a non-existent desire for the pair to be independent, maintaining geopolitical clarity with the USSR that collapses one year later or that isn't explicitly justified as weakening that country. Germans wouldn't be cool w/any of them!

The backlash to 'international order decides two halves of a nation can't unify because it might not suit distant geopolitical conflicts that never came to be' would also be incredible for an AfD-like's image in West Germany too.

I remember anti-immigrant rhetoric there seeing a real upsurge from the moment an article about how progressives were fighting to preserve the rights of immigrants was published back in 2024. Among many there, no conviction outlasts being able to maybe mock @genericprogressive (she/her) on Twitter.

It's incredibly unfun to see major news institutions like the BBC embrace this form of rhetoric. Knowing that I'm really not welcome in the country I was born in and that it's beholden to a fringe group of obsessive extremists is utterly abysmal.

Why depict it in the first place if the strip just won't ever treat it as something more than a sideshow to a different conflict and storyline? Why depict the conflict as analogous to Palestine at all if the few descriptions we're ever going to get of Bulmeria indicates it's in civil war?
November 6, 2025 at 11:25 AM
Then why introduce it in the first place?? It's based off of a real event that had significant, real-world consequences for those protesting against genocide, and the way the Dunn Meadow encampment has been relegated like this just feels rough.

It's not even that far away! The Scottish and Welsh elections are in less than half a year, and both look to be apocalyptic for Labour!

I am fascinated in the ~5% of people who seemingly think that police should exist, but not prisons.

Killing millions of people and making life indisputably worse for everybody because you don't get the smiley sticker at your favourite shop anymore. Legitimately such a pathetic worldview.

To be honest, she was never going to be a good candidate. Her acquiescing after the Hartlepool by-election in 2021, even when it seemed clear that Starmer was open to resigning and her base was secure, indicates that she doesn't quite have the same capacity as other possible figures to run.

If the 2028 Republican primaries go ahead as normal, I fully expect at least one candidate to openly call for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act.

Yeah, Polanski's conduct there is really questionable, but Wes Streeting is meeting with open Christian fundamentalists to discuss policy on trans rights. As much as it pains me to say, I have bigger concerns than Polanski's past as a hypnotherapist.

To be honest, I vaguely struggle to accept the notion of Plaid doing well in the Senedd and that only accounting for Conwy/Cardiff West in the general. But even that, let alone Reform sweeping here, is a damning indictment for Starmer and McSweeney.
August 3, 2025 at 5:28 PM
If nothing else, remember that Starmer dipped by about ten points in the polls during the leadup to last election. Farage, for his myriad of flaws, is far more visible in the public eye than Starmer ever was, but that doesn't preclude an incompetent campaign pushing him down in the polls.

How insane was he by 1956?
July 19, 2025 at 6:14 PM
What about Chancellor McSweeney?
July 3, 2025 at 2:13 AM
I don't even think he was *that* centrist socially - he supported leaving the ECHR! Certainly more moderate than what we have now, but that's more an indictment on our part than something laudable on his.
