Would definitely recommend Kinuyo Tanaka’s FOREVER A WOMAN / THE ETERNAL BREASTS (1955), especially to fans of Naruse and Ozu.
A tender heartbreaking and beautifully shot female-centric film, taking in infidelity by an uncaring husband, doomed love and terminal illness. #FilmSky

Love these photographs of Leonora Carrington and Leonor Fini from the LEE MILLER exhibition at Tate Britain.

The Philip Mould & Co gallery on Pall Mall is one of London’s lesser-known gems. So lovely to share it @joiedevivre9.bsky.social while she’s here on her trip! #Art #ArtSky

Huge thanks to @kirkdalebooks.bsky.social / @rolandbates.bsky.social for the tip off about the exhibition of Denton Welch’s art at the John Swarbrooke in London. Such a wonderfully strange collection of works!
Sadly, it’s finished now, but here are some pics. #art #BookSky 💙📚 #DentonWelch

Back at the Michael Werner Gallery in Mayfair today for another look at the POSTURES: JEAN RHYS IN THE MODERN WORLD exhibition, which includes various artworks in conversation with Rhys’ books.
Some interesting Brontë content here, for fans of their work! (Artworks by Celia Paul.) #art #BookSky 💙📚

My favourite first-time watches in October.
Various highlights from the London Film Fest here, plus another Mikhail Kalatozov and some classic horror. A terrific month! #FilmSky #LFF #Films

My #LastFourWatched for #LetterboxdFriday.
I went big on horror this week, with 3 first-time watches, all classics. Then a re-watch of THE HOUSE OF MIRTH as part of the BFI's Terence D. retrospective. (I guess this could qualify as a horror story in disguise, given the way it plays out!) #FilmSky

Thinking of having a bit of a horror fest in the run-up to Halloween. First up, POSSESSION (1981), which I’ve somehow never seen. #FilmSky

Really glad I was able to catch Do Ho Suh’s WALK THE HOUSE exhibition at Tate Modern yesterday - a surprising show about architecture, home and memory, which draws on the various spaces this South Korean artist has lived in over the years. #art #ArtSky #DoHoSuh #WalkTheHouse #Tate

ORPHAN (László Nemes). A young boy must come to terms with his origins in this slow-burning story set in the aftermath of Hungary’s unsuccessful uprising against Russia’s controlling forces. For some reason, this didn’t quite catch fire for me, and I’m still trying to figure out why. #LFF #FilmSky

DIE MY LOVE (Lynne Ramsay). Loved Jennifer Lawrence’s blistering, fully committed performance in this vivid interpretation of Ariana Harwicz’s out-there novella about a woman unraveling in the grip of post-partum psychosis. Great use of music too, as ever in Ramsay’s work. #LFF #FilmSky

TWO PROSECUTORS (Sergei Loznitsa). State tyranny has been a recurring theme in my #LFF and this might be the most chilling of all. Filmed in a bleak style that reflects the grim reality of the system, this excellent film exposes the pervasive bureaucracy & oppression at the heart of Stalin’s Russia.

THE ICE TOWER (Lucile Hadzihalilovic). Lots of interesting themes - loneliness, fascination, identity, mirroring - in this visually striking riff on elements of THE SNOW QUEEN. Having loved LH’s previous work, I was all set to be mesmerised by this, but its icy remoteness left me somewhat cold. #LFF

MY FATHER’S SHADOW (Akinola Davies Jr). Evocative use of sound & visuals immerse the viewer in the turbulence of early ‘90s Nigeria as two young boys are briefly reunited with their previously absent father. Loved the focus on the children in this. Highly recommended! #LFF #FilmSky

As this jagged narrative unfolds, Harwicz blurs the boundaries between the real and the imaginary, infusing the novella with a nightmarish quality, rich in the kind of imagery commonly found in horror fiction.
My thoughts on the novella DIE, MY LOVE. 💙📚
