I picked up The Song of Achilles around the same time I played Hades and the characters were so beautiful and rich and alive that I started googling, buying books, devouring any scrap of Greek mythology that I could. I couldn’t believe there was this whole world I had known nothing about when it permeated so much of how we exist today. Growing up in a deprived area, going to a state school, I’d never come across a whisper of it. It had been decided that it wasn’t for me. It was knowledge sequestered for the privileged few. I felt stupid. I felt robbed. I felt angry. In my ravenous hunger for more information, stories, history, I came across Working Classicists on Twitter. They championed exactly the issue I’d encountered: access. They provided Note app text that reads: resources, opportunity, platform without barriers - for everyone. I felt community. I felt valued. I felt seen. I couldn’t believe it when I discovered the wonderful humans who ran it lived locally. Something else having access to Classics gave me: personal, joyous and lasting friendships with Miri & George (& Posca!). I’ve never known two people work so hard and give so much of themselves to something they believe in. It was an unexpected boon to be given the opportunity to publish a book from Contubernales, but what Miri & George did with it is nothing short of miraculous. Based on a teaching tool of George’s, The Periodic Table of Greek Mythology is a compendium of gods, monsters and mortals from 117 writers - all guided, Note app text that reads: personally fedback and edited by Miri. Nowhere else in the field of Classics will you find a book with the diversity of background and lived experience as this one, namely with 80% from a working classic background. I first came across Medea in Roger Lancelyn Green’s Tales of the Greek Heroes as “the witch-maiden” and instantly fell in love. Working Classicists gave me the opportunity to have my own words about Medea in a book, that might ignite that same love in someone else. You can’t fathom what that means to me, and every individual writer who got to contribute, many being published for the first time. All proceeds go directly into Working Classicists projects to continue their mission of access to Classics, bringing the subject to state schools, and empowering marginalised voices in the field.
